Specially designed as a reconnaissance vehicle, the Ford Light Armored Car M8 is mainly intended for mechanized cavalry units. With 8,523 examples built, it covered all the needs in this field. Only one variant was produced on the basis of its mechanics: the M20 Armored Utility Car without a gun, of which 3,791 units rolled off the production line.
Launched in 1941, the project for the new combat vehicle did not come to fruition until March 1943, when the first vehicles were accepted by the army. An Ordnance Department officer, Lieutenant J.R. Murray, was charged with being the link between the various army components and the manufacturers. Throughout the creation and realisation process, he collected, with his notes, reports and letters concerning this very particular project. These 1,500 pages of archives have enabled the author to faithfully retrace the process of creating these machines, from the first draft to the end of production in June 1945.
