The tribulations that the tanks of France have experienced during their history are so numerous that they cannot be summarised in a few pages without being reductive or even partisan. From the Schneider tank of 1916 to the Leclerc tank of the year 2000, via the B tank of 1940, we have chosen to retrace this epic made of glory during the First World War, sacrifices at the beginning of the Second and today of mastery. All the stages of their technical history are rigorously described. But this duty of remembrance is so rich that the author has been led to deal only with combat tanks, which are regulated in one way or another in our army. Wheeled self-propelled guns, self-propelled vehicles, specialised vehicles, etc., have therefore been left out. Seventy years of studies, efforts, bold initiatives but also difficulties overcome are the foundations of this memory that we have revived from historical documents drawn from the best sources. Designers and the industrial world, private or state-owned, tacticians and users bear witness to an original history of men with unknown or little-known aspects, revealed here for the first time.
